Spiros Rantos was a renowned violinist and conductor, born in Corfu, Greece, and raised in Athens.
He pursued his musical studies in Vienna, Austria, where he met his wife and musical partner, Israeli-born pianist Brachi Tilles.
As the founder, artistic director, and conductor of the Rantos Collegium and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Rantos has had a profound impact on the music scene.He has also taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Victorian College of the Arts, the University of Southern Queensland, and the University of Melbourne. He served as a senior lecturer at the UQ School of Music from 1996 to 2009.He taught privately until the end of his physical life. Many of his students won first prizes in numerous competitions.
Throughout his illustrious career, Spiros has achieved numerous accolades, winning international violin competitions in Colmar, France, and Forte dei Marmi, Italy. He has also been a tireless advocate for Australian composers, commissioning and promoting over 400 performances of their music worldwide as a soloist, chamber music player, and conductor.Rantos has an extensive discography, with over 55 recordings released on prominent labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Harmonia Mundi, Adelcord, and Grevillea Records. He has been a frequent guest performer for national broadcast companies in Europe, Asia, and beyond, showcasing his exceptional talent and musical expertise to a global audience.
